Casablanca Finance City officially unveiled the Africa Carbon Hub initiative at a high-level side event during COP30, gathering ministers, financiers, and carbon market experts.
Casablanca Finance City (CFC) formally launched the Africa Carbon Hub at a high-level side event on the margins of COP30 in Belém, Brazil. The event convened over 150 attendees including ministers of environment and finance, institutional investors, multilateral development bank representatives, and carbon market practitioners from 28 countries.
Speaking at the launch, CFC's Secretary General described the initiative as 'a strategic response to Africa's persistent under-representation in global carbon finance flows, despite holding the world's largest remaining natural capital reserves.' The Hub, established as a joint initiative between CFC and the Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion (CDG), will serve as Africa's institutional anchor for carbon market development, connecting projects, capital, and policy across the continent.
The event featured a panel discussion on the operationalisation of Article 6.2 bilateral agreements, with speakers from Morocco, Kenya, and Senegal sharing progress on government-to-government carbon cooperation frameworks. Panellists noted that while political momentum is building, standardised methodologies and legal frameworks for corresponding adjustments remain the primary technical bottleneck.
Africa Carbon Hub also announced its founding Advisory Board at the launch, composed of senior figures from African development finance institutions, international carbon standard bodies, and leading climate-focused asset managers. The Board will provide strategic guidance on the Hub's brokerage, advisory, and training mandates.
In the weeks following COP30, the Hub has received over 60 project developer expressions of interest from 19 African countries, spanning cookstoves, agroforestry, solar mini-grids, and avoided deforestation. The team is currently prioritising initial advisory mandates with a focus on bankability assessments and standards alignment.
